The Invention of Bingo
The origins of bingo can be traced back to the 16th century. In 1530, the Italians played a lottery game called Lo Giuoco del Lotto D’Italia. This game is still played every Saturday in modern Italy. The game moved to France in the later half of the 18th century, where it was called ‘Le Lotto’ – this version of the game was mostly played by the wealthy. By the early 1800s, it had moved to Germany, where it was used as an educational tool, to help students learn spelling, history, and mathematics.
The game eventually made it over to the United States, where it was played at carnivals and fairs. By the 1960s, this bingo game was regularly being played in the United Kingdom. The government passed the Gaming Act, which allowed bingo and similar games to be played in members-only establishments.
Since then, online bingo gaming has become very popular.
Some people just enjoy the excitement of the game – playing travel bingo, multiplication bingo, and other games just for fun. Others enjoy the chance to win some money, or prizes, by playing something that lasts a little longer than a single race or a lottery game. Bingo can be many things to many people, and that is part of the fun of the game.
Why do you play bingo? Is it the social aspect, like the wealthy Frenchmen who would come together to play? Or is it the excitement of waiting for the caller to pull out your numbers, and the fun of the humorous calls that are used? Whatever your reason – good luck next game, may your numbers come out first!
